Meet the most powerful production Golf ever, Volkswagen’s new Golf R packs 315 hp with all-wheel drive and a torque-vectoring rear differential. Since the launch of the 8th generation Golf platform, fans have been hanging out for the range topping R model to arrive. Now Volkswagen have taken the wraps off, revealing a familiar recipe for their very successful hot hatch.

The turbocharged inline 4 engine is producing 315 hp and 420 Nm of torque for the R, slightly higher than the previous generation’s Clubsport S at 306 hp. Peak torque is available from as low as 2,000 rpm and holding it all the way up to 5,800 rpm. The all-wheel drive system remains a Haldex style setup, but this time it has a new power torque-vectoring rear differential that can send up to 100 percent of available torque to each of the rear wheels.

A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is the only options for buyers with Volkswagen citing a lack of interest in a manual option. The box fitted benefits from quicker shifts and shorter gearing which helps the Golf R accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds with a limited top speed of 155 mph.
