Description
Hyperion have revealed the first hydrogen powered hypercar, making an interesting case for alternative fuels. A California-based start-up, Hyperion main business is as an energy company who supply parts to NASA. Needless to say they are keen to push the benefits of hydrogen power as an alternative to not only petrol and diesel, but batteries as well.
Not a lot is known yet about the actual powertrain of the XP-1, but Hyperion is quoting some impressive performance numbers. 0-60 mph in under 2.2 seconds and a top speed of over 220 mph, certainly numbers that hang with most performance cars on the market. They are also claiming 1,000 miles of range per single tank of hydrogen fuel, which can be re-filled in 3 to 5 minutes. Expect the XP-1 to have at least a couple of electric motors positioned front and back providing all-wheel drive, and a titanium carbon fiber chassis weighing just over a tonne.
Rather interesting is the inclusion of active aero parts that can also double as solar panels, helping to provide some extra charge for those electric motors and extending range. The interior will feature a monstrous 98-inch curved display that will dominate the space and provide gesture controls for most functions. Hyperion are planning on producing 300 units of the XP-1 with production to start in 2022.
